Immediately recognisable, the Sandman himself makes an appearance in Spider-Man 2 as the first main boss of the game. Marko has grown to massive proportions and is kicking up a storm of sand and wreaking havoc on the city. This boss is something of a tutorial fight, so you are walked through how to beat him and avoid his attacks as you play as Peter and Miles. The only villains we get are Kraven, Venom, Sandman, The Lizard, and Mysterio (kind of).

With the new interactive elements like super slingshots and wind tunnels that act as jet streams, Spider-Man has never been faster in the air. Accompanying the highly anticipated sequel at launch, Sony has confirmed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will have its own custom PS5 bundle along with a unique DualSense controller design to boot. On top of that, it’s expected to set the scene ahead of the game’s arrival, giving us further insight into what Peter, Miles, and MJ have all been getting up to since their last appearance. During the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Insomniac Games revealed some gameplay of the upcoming title, which you can see above. Insomniac shared the Story Trailer for Spider-Man 2, giving not only a better look at the plot of the sequel, but many of the characters involved too. From Harry Osborne’s ominous pledge to the surprise return of Mr. Negative, there’s plenty to whet your appetite before jumping into the full game later this year.

These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. These later stages are where the majority of Spider-Man 2’s thrills lay, however, as it really hits its stride late on, and emphatically wraps up a tale with miles of emotional depth that never once threatens to peter out. Speaking of boss battles, that’s one area that takes a noticeable step up from our initial tangos with Kingpin, Vulture, and the rest. One of my criticisms of the first in Insomniac’s series was how uninspired many of the showdowns felt, with their quicktime-heavy fights making a light impact. Improvements were made in Miles Morales, but here in the full-fledged sequel, boss battles really come to life. You’re made to wait a little too long for them sometimes, but when they do arrive they never fail to excite.

Insomniac wanted to tell an original story that was not linked to an existing property, creating a unique universe (known as Earth-1048) that has since appeared in novels, merchandise, and comics. That liveliness is apparent in both the visuals and the motion-captured performances. Even when maniacally whipping through midtown on a spider’s thread, it’s hard not to give into the urge to regularly stop and soak in the glitz of the current gen graphics. In Fidelity mode, the game runs at 4K resolution with full raytracing on display.

That sentiment, often attributed to creator Stan Lee in some form, has always been the core of what makes the character — perhaps the world’s most famous superhero — so accessible. G28 ’s the idea that, by donning the mask, anyone could step up and be Spider-Man, regardless of their race or gender. It became the central thesis for the excellent 2018 film Into the Spider-Verse, which widely popularized not just Miles Morales as the web-head, but a slew of variants from across the multiverse. As of the PC release of Spider-Man 2 in 2025, these DLC suits are free for all players on both PS5 and PC.

Though many of these have indications of their location in-game, not all of them are clear. Traversal too, is more of the same, but that’s hard to knock when swinging around the city as Spider-Man feels this damned good. Although the game’s map is now expanded beyond Manhattan isle to include truncated facsimiles of the outer boroughs (WTF is “Downtown Queens?”), zipping around at breakneck speed is more exhilarating than ever.

It’s all going well for the duo until a new threat emerges, a seemingly unstoppable killer named Kraven, appears out of the blue on a mission to have the perfect hunt, leaving a trail of super-powered bodies in his wake. There’s also a certain symbiote inching its way into their lives that will instantly flag to anyone even remotely familiar with Spider-Man lore where the story is heading. Since the dawn of Atari, there have been dozens of Spider-Man games, and despite the occasional gem, most developers have struggled to embody what makes the wall crawler work. It isn’t about power fantasy or the rogue’s gallery, it’s about the little things.

Many online Spider-Men are convinced that the face model is new, but Insomniac Community Manager, James Stevenson, confirmed it remains Stephanie Tyler Jones. MJ does admittedly look different to the young reporter in 2018, but this is because of a new haircut combined with advancements in graphics and face capturing.
