While Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) was released on PS4 and later ported to PS5 and PC, the sequel stuck its guns to the PS5 platform alone. A Spider-Man 2 trailer with an extended gameplay demonstration was revealed during the latest PlayStation Showcase. The 10-minute video highlighted how players will switch between Peter and Miles in the game, and their new combat abilities, including a fiendish Symbiote suit that grants Peter some aggressive new powers.

Today, we’re comparing everything from the gameplay to the cosmetics to find out which Marvel’s Spider-Man game did it better than the other. When Marvel’s Spider-Man hit the stores in 2018, many critics thought it was the best rendition Insomniac Games could ever give to the wall-crawling-friendly neighborhood superhero. Now that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is out, though, those sentiments are beginning to possibly change, depending, of course, on your outlook on the gradually booming franchise. During the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Insomniac Games revealed some gameplay of the upcoming title, which you can see above. The popular anti-hero may serve as a villain, a not-so-friendly ally in a greater battle, or perhaps even a mix of both throughout the game.

Marvel’s Spider-man

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 welcomes players back to the hustle and bustle of New York City and puts Miles Morales and Peter Parker into the shared spotlight. While the adventure to take down Kraven is mostly linear, offering players a straightforward narrative, there’s still a lot of side content to dive into, like combat challenges, collectibles, quests, and much more. Check out our Marvel Rivals beginners guide for some tips on how to get started, and yes, you can play as Spidey there, too. Despite a couple of new tricks up its sleeve, Spider-Man 2’s combat is very familiar – it doesn’t have that new suit smell anymore, but it still feels incredibly comfy to slip back into. The rhythm of precision dodges, the new perfect parries (so you’re not only swerving and striking now), and acrobatic finishers are hugely satisfying, as is chasing high-hit combos to keep the fight as stylish as possible. The movement is smooth and the hits are crunching, like some sort of peanut butter hybrid that every one of your foes is allergic to.

A particularly memorable mission under the dancing lights of Coney Island’s amusement rides is a highlight that manages to impressively capture the story’s essence and bottle up its emotional tension before emphatically smashing it. For those with a hazy memory, there is a brief recap of both Peter and Miles’ stories so far available, which is handy, as this is very much a sequel that weaves in both plotlines and characters from the previous games and accompanying DLC. You won’t want to jump in for the first time here since Spider-Man 2 builds on the first two games both in its mechanics and its story – but of course, there’s little reason not to, since those games are also excellent. Avoiding spoilers, the basic premise revolves around Kraven the Hunter, who is, well, craving a hunt.

On the whole it’s a tried and true set-up for a Spider-Man story—the perils of leading a double life, making sacrifices to do the right thing, all that jazz. But that does also mean it’s a story we’ve seen an awful lot of times before, not only across films, TV, and comics, but also in the previous two games in this series. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 lets players swing through the streets of New York as Peter Parker and Miles Morales, facing off against formidable foes in an action-packed superhero adventure.

Trophy List

First up, in an interview with Famitsu, Insomniac’s creative director Bryan Intihar teased the map “is about two times larger than the previous titles” thanks to the addition of Queens and Brooklyn. It’s been three years since the first Spidey game by the studio launched to critical acclaim, and the universe has only been growing since. This top-tier configuration allows you to experience the game in 4K with all ray tracing features maxed out. This setup provides access to more advanced ray tracing options and better visual quality. As you might expect from a game with these requirements, the Spider-Man 2 download size is big. The PC version is larger than the PS5 file size, sitting at 140GB, and an SSD will be required to run it.

Venom isn’t around long enough either, especially for the impact they act like he had on the city, but it just about made all the waiting worth it. Especially with the added personal connection between Spider-Man and Venom, really highlighting Venom as the dark mirror of Peter. Hopes were high when the teasers at the end of both Spider-Man and Miles Morales teased the arrival of Venom. And, thankfully, it’s the only part of the story they actually did well. Using it to tell a tragic tale of two friends, instead of the more standard Eddie Brock story.

The main story took me around 18 hours to complete before I hit 100%, and the subsequent platinum trophy popped up to congratulate my efforts after 27 in total. Despite whatever loftier ambitions the story may have, this is still unapologetically an old-school approach to open-world game design, and nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in its optional quests. Spider-Man 2, and to an extent all great Spider-Man stories, tackle themes of adolescence and puberty – a time of uncertainty for even the most normal of teenagers trying to control bodily fluids. We join Miles at this exact point in his life, with family ties straining, friendships facing fresh challenges, and life decisions of genuine importance being posed for the first time.
